What changes going from HEIC to WebP

This is the conversion that gives up the least of what HEIC was doing. LeanImg decodes the HEVC image with libheif into 8-bit RGBA and hands it to the jSquash WebP encoder at quality 80, which writes a lossy VP8 frame. There is no lossless option on this path, and WebP has no 10-bit mode anyway, so a 10-bit heix capture comes out as 8-bit sRGB with its HDR gain map left behind.

Size typically lands close to the original and often a touch larger, since VP8 is a less efficient coder than HEVC while still well ahead of baseline JPEG. An alpha plane, if present, is written as WebP alpha rather than flattened, so a cut-out exported from an iPad app keeps its soft edges. Rotation and crop instructions in the HEIC are applied during decoding, so the WebP is upright without relying on an orientation tag.

As with every output here, the encoder receives pixels only: EXIF, capture time, GPS and the colour profile are not copied into the WebP, and the image is mapped to sRGB first. That suits web delivery, where metadata is dead weight and wide-gamut profiles are ignored by most image pipelines anyway.

Don't do this when the file is bound for a print shop, an older desktop application or an email attachment; there a JPG opens without question and a WebP may not.

What is a WebP file?

Google announced WebP in September 2010, built from the VP8 keyframe coder, and the IETF later published it as RFC 9649. One container holds two unrelated codecs — lossy VP8 intra-frame coding and a separate lossless LZ77 mode — which is why quality 100 lossy is still lossy. Google measures roughly 30% off JPEG at matching quality and about 26% off PNG for lossless. The catch: lossy WebP is locked to 4:2:0 chroma, so saturated reds and syntax-highlighted screenshots can look worse than a JPEG of the same size.

Windows is the friction point: the Photos app only gained WebP in a 2023 update.
