How to Make a Passport Photo

1

Choose your document

Search for your country and pick the passport, visa or ID photo you need.

2

Add your photo

Upload a photo or take one with your camera. The tool finds your face and frames it to the document's rules.

3

Download or print

Save the digital file for an online form, or a print sheet for 4x6, 5x7, A4 or Letter paper.

Why LeanImg?

Paid passport photo services charge $13.95 or more for a file you can make yourself. LeanImg's passport photo maker is free with no watermark and no account. It applies the size, head height and background rules for your document, and it hits the file size limit an online form sets. Your photo is processed on this device and never uploaded. Explore all of our free image tools.

Free, No Watermark

Download the digital photo and the print sheet at full quality. No account and no paywall at the last step.

Exact Size for Each Form

Pixel size, file size limit and 300 DPI are set per document, so a US visa photo stays under 240 KB and an Indian passport photo is exactly 630 x 810.

Nothing to Install

Works in your browser on phones and computers. Take the photo with your camera or upload one you already have.

What the Passport Photo Tool Does

What gets measured

Head height comes first. It runs from your chin to the top of your head and is compared with the range your document allows. The eye line comes next, then head tilt and turn, open eyes, a closed mouth and the background behind you, along with whether any part of your head is cut off by the frame. The size and angle rows show the number they found. A red row tells you what to change.

The background is replaced for you

Most rules ask for a plain white or light gray background, and few homes have a wall like that. So the tool cuts you out and places you on the color your document requires, a moment after the first preview appears. One tap switches back to your original background, and you can compare the two. If your wall was already plain, the original often looks more natural. Keep whichever version you'd hand to an officer.

File size limits on online forms

Online applications reject files outside a size window, and the error rarely says why. The US DS-160 visa form takes a JPEG up to 240 KB. India's Passport Seva wants exactly 630 x 810 pixels between 10 and 250 KB. The UK's online passport service asks for at least 600 x 750 pixels and 50 KB to 10 MB. Your photo is encoded inside the window for the document you picked, and the final size is shown when you download it. For any other form, the image compressor can hit a target in kilobytes.

Printing at the right size

A print sheet only works at true scale. In the print dialog choose Actual size or 100%. Fit and Fill both rescale the page by a few percent, which is enough to push head height outside the rules. A 4x6 lab sheet holds six 2 x 2 inch photos or eight 35 x 45 mm ones. A4 and Letter sheets carry a 25 mm ruler, so measure it before you cut. If it isn't 25 mm, the printer scaled the page.

The first photo downloads the models

The face model and the background model download to your browser the first time, up to about 127 MB, and stay cached after that. Later photos start right away. Your photo itself is never sent anywhere. Open your browser's network tab during a run and you'll see the model files arriving and no upload of your photo.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does LeanImg make a passport photo?

In your browser. It finds your face, measures the chin, eyes and top of the head, then straightens and crops the photo to your document's rules. The background is replaced with the required color. The size checks show their measured value next to the allowed range, so you can see exactly where a photo falls short.

Which file formats can I upload?

JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC, including photos straight from an iPhone. The finished photo comes out as a JPEG at the exact pixel size your document needs, tagged at 300 DPI so it prints at true size. The print sheet is a JPEG too, and you can also save it as a PDF.

Can I make passport photos for several people at once?

One person per photo. Head size and eye position are measured for a single face, so a group shot won't work. Once a photo is done you can switch to another document without uploading again, and the print sheet fills a whole page with copies of the same photo.

What size is a passport photo?

It depends on the country. A US passport photo is 2 x 2 inches, which is 600 x 600 pixels at 300 DPI; online forms take 600 to 1200 pixels. The UK, India and the Schengen states print at 35 x 45 mm. China asks for 33 x 48 mm. Pick your document above and its size, head height and background are applied for you.

How do I get a white background?

Automatically. The background is replaced with the color your document requires: white for the US and India, light gray for the UK. If you'd rather keep your original background, switch it back after processing and compare both versions before you download. Shooting against a plain light wall gives the cleanest edges.

Will my passport photo be accepted?

That's the issuing office's call. LeanImg measures your photo against the published rules for the document you picked, including head height, eye line, tilt, expression and background, and shows each result. Fix anything marked in red before you submit, and check your document's official rules; where we have a link to them, it's under the document picker.
