What changes going from HEIC to JPG

LeanImg opens the HEIC with a WebAssembly build of libheif, which unpacks the HEVC image into 8-bit RGBA pixels and applies the rotation and crop instructions Apple stores beside them, so the JPEG comes out oriented the way Photos showed it. Only the primary image is read: the depth map, the HDR gain map and a Live Photo's video clip stay behind, and a 10-bit heix capture is reduced to 8 bits per channel.

Both formats are lossy, so this is a second round of compression on pixels that already went through one. MozJPEG encodes the result at quality 85 unless you move the slider, and at that setting the added loss is hard to see. The file typically grows by half to double, because HEVC packs the same picture tighter than a DCT encoder can. If the HEIC carries an alpha plane, which is rare outside screenshots and edited exports, it is composited onto white.

Nothing but pixels crosses over. EXIF, the capture date, GPS coordinates and the Display P3 profile are all dropped, because the encoder is handed raw pixel data rather than the original container, and the browser maps the colours to sRGB while decoding. Good news for a photo you are about to post publicly; keep the HEIC if the metadata matters.

Skip this conversion when everything in the chain is Apple hardware and nothing outside it needs the file, because you would pay in bytes and a little quality for compatibility you already have.

What is a JPG file?

JPEG is the photographic standard the Joint Photographic Experts Group published in 1992, as ISO/IEC 10918-1 and ITU-T T.81. It cuts the image into 8x8 blocks, runs a discrete cosine transform over each one, then discards the coefficients your eye is least likely to miss — and almost every encoder throws away three quarters of the color resolution first, which is why colored text and thin diagram lines suffer. No JPEG mode has an alpha channel, so transparency has to be flattened onto a solid color.
