What changes going from JPG to WebP
Your JPEG's pixels are decoded, any rotation flag is applied on the way, and VP8 compresses them again at quality 80 by default. The number means VP8's scale, which doesn't line up with the one your camera or editor used, so 80 here and 80 there are different amounts of loss. Whatever blocking the first encoder left is carried into the WebP as if it were picture detail.
Measured on our fixture photo, a 3840x2160 JPEG of 538.6 KB came out at 290.3 KB as WebP at quality 80, through the same encoder call the compressor runs. Treat that as one data point; heavily compressed JPEGs have less left to squeeze, and a JPEG saved at quality 95 or above drops much further. Camera metadata, GPS coordinates and the ICC profile don't ride along, which is worth knowing before you publish and worth missing if this was your only copy.
Compatibility shifts from universal to nearly universal. Browsers are covered, but email attachments, many CMS upload filters and older desktop viewers still balk at a .webp, and an older Windows 10 install may not thumbnail it at all. Don't convert the only copy of a photo you care about; keep the JPEG as the master and treat the WebP as a delivery format you can regenerate at any time.

What is a WebP file?
Google announced WebP in September 2010, built from the VP8 keyframe coder, and the IETF later published it as RFC 9649. One container holds two unrelated codecs — lossy VP8 intra-frame coding and a separate lossless LZ77 mode — which is why quality 100 lossy is still lossy. Google measures roughly 30% off JPEG at matching quality and about 26% off PNG for lossless. The catch: lossy WebP is locked to 4:2:0 chroma, so saturated reds and syntax-highlighted screenshots can look worse than a JPEG of the same size.
