How big should a digital passport photo be?
The form's pixel dimensions and byte limit determine the size of the digital passport photograph, which the issuing authority sets.

How big should a digital passport photo be?
The requirements depend on the type of form you are filling out. India Passport Seva accepts a JPEG with dimensions 630 x 810. For the DS-160 form, you have to use a square JPEG file with a size of no more than 240 KB. When renewing your US passport online, the file size must be between 54 KB and 10 MB, and the resolution should be between 600 and 1200 pixels. The UK online application requires a file that is at least 600 x 750 pixels and recommends that you should not crop it.
The print being measured in millimetres doesn't mean that the portal will determine the pixel size.
The matter we are concerned with is the Passport Seva upload. In order to upload the ICAO photograph in PDF format, you will need a colour JPEG with a white background and a size of 630 by 810 pixels. The face should take up 80 to 85 per cent of the frame; the 630 by 810 pixel box is the size specified by the portal.
The Indian passport photo has dimensions of 35 x 45 mm when printed, and at 300 DPI this corresponds to 413 x 531 pixels. Yet, when a photo with dimensions of 413 x 531 pixels is uploaded to Passport Seva, it fails to satisfy the required 630 x 810 pixel size.
The international travel document called ICAO Doc 9303 specifies that the printed portrait should be included within a region measuring no more than 35 mm by 45 mm, the vertical distance from the top of the head to the chin being 70 to 80 per cent of the longer side; national authorities then superimpose their own pixel boxes and KB windows on this base.
Is the photograph employed for a US passport the same as the one used with the DS-160 form?
By any means, both of them are square and need a white or off-white background with the head occupying between 50% and 69% of the frame.
The DS-160 digital image specifications require a square JPEG image with dimensions between 600 and 1200 pixels in both width and height and a file size of no more than 240 KB, to be in the sRGB colour space and have a bit depth of 24 bits. In order to comply with these specifications, our tool sets the image at 600 x 600 pixels.
When you apply by post, the US passport photograph must have dimensions of 2 by 2 inches and the height of the head, measured from the chin to the top of the head, must be 1 inch and 3/8 of an inch. In the case of an online renewal, the Department of State requires the original, unaltered file, which has to be between 54 KB and 10 MB and must be in JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF; you are required to crop the image as part of the application process. Our specification for a US passport, provided that the source image is large enough, is 1200 by 1200.
You are still making a mistake if you reduce the 1200 by 1200 image to less than 240 KB; you must make sure that the DS-160 file stays a DS-160 file.
CVS is now selling two 2 by 2 passport photos for $17.99 and, at certain stores, providing a digital copy for an additional $3.99; the photos are printed on paper, and the DS-160 upload is a JPEG file of under 240 KB.
The expressions displayed also differ because the US online renewal page gives the option of either a neutral expression or a natural smile and instructs people to avoid showing their teeth, whereas GOV.UK asks for a simple expression with the mouth closed.
What does the online form in the UK ask you to avoid?
The digital photograph has to be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels high, not less than 50 KB and not more than 10 MB, in colour and in focus. It should not be modified using computer software and you must not crop the photo since we will crop it ourselves.
Using the same 1600x2400 setting gives a result of 1067 by 1600, amounting to 857,474 bytes or 837 KB.
A printed photograph is a different kind of document since its size is 35 x 45 mm and it needs cropping; the background is either light grey or cream, whereas the online file is uncropped.
The photographs taken in a booth or in a shop have a better chance of being approved than those taken using your own device.
Since my file was the wrong size, it has been rejected, has it not?
Portals calculate kilobytes in two different ways and usually do not tell you which method they have adopted. A limit of "240 KB" could mean either 240,000 bytes or 245,760.
In India, the window is 10 to 250 KB; the DS-160 has a maximum limit of 240 KB and no stated minimum limit, while for US online renewals the range is 54 KB to 10 MB and for the UK online option it is 50 KB to 10 MB.
The United States State Department continues to state that the main reason applications are put on hold is because of unacceptable photographs. In September 2026, Digital.gov noted that error rates relating to the background, head position, and image quality dropped by almost 50 per cent following improvements to the official crop tool, most of the errors having been caused by people who uploaded the photographs themselves.
When a file is very small it is most likely a screenshot or a forwarded message from WhatsApp; and when it is too large it is usually an HEIC file from an iPhone that has been saved at full quality, about 240 KB. Moving the general quality slider on a 1200 by 1200 image usually doesn't take you to the setting you want.
Should a photograph in which the background has been replaced be regarded as an edited photograph?
Where the office insists that the photograph must be unaltered, the US online renewal page instructs you to submit the original photograph without applying any filters or making digital alterations, and the examples given on that page reject a retouched outline of the head and neck. The same thing is stated by the ICAO photograph PDF from India Passport Seva, which says the photograph should not be altered using computer software, just as GOV. UK does.
The passport photo maker will change the background to the colour stated in the specifications since the majority of people's house walls are not that colour. This change is a form of digital alteration. If the website does not permit any edits, then you should keep the original photograph and take the picture in front of a real plain wall. You have to stand far enough from the wall to make sure that your head does not cast a shadow on it. We take into account both your head height and your eye level, as well as the angle of your head and your expression.
Canada, France, Germany and South Africa insist on the use of a professional photographer when preparing certain documents; the instructions include an option for photographers only, which has no facility for uploading. This is the office's policy and the tool follows it.
The short version
