What changes going from WebP to AVIF

Both halves of this trip are lossy, and they don't share a quantizer. VP8 already rounded the image once; AV1 now rounds that result again at quality 50, the default this page sets when AVIF is the target. On a photo the second rounding is usually invisible at normal viewing size. On a lossless WebP screenshot it's the first lossy step the image has ever taken, and crisp UI text will pick up faint halos.

Nothing about the source improves in the move. A WebP is already 8-bit and its color was subsampled when it was made, so AVIF's 10-bit and HDR abilities have nothing to work with here, and the encoder writes 8-bit output anyway. The alpha channel is kept. Metadata chunks in the WebP container are discarded. An animated WebP is reduced to a single still without any notice in the result card, since only animated GIFs are checked for extra frames.

Expect a modest saving, typically a fifth to a third on photographic content, paid for with encode times around ten seconds per camera-sized frame and a smaller audience: Safari read WebP from version 14 and AVIF only from 16, two years later. It pays off on large images you serve yourself with a fallback. It rarely pays off on a WebP under 50 KB, and it's the wrong move entirely for a lossless screenshot you still need pixel-perfect.

What is a AVIF file?

AVIF is a single AV1 keyframe wrapped in the same ISOBMFF container HEIC uses. The Alliance for Open Media published version 1.0 in February 2019, and Google measures better than 50% savings against JPEG at comparable quality. It carries continuous alpha as a separate auxiliary image, and its 10-bit color with Rec.2020 or P3 signalling makes it the only common web format that can do HDR stills. The cost is encoding time: AVIF inherits AV1's computational profile, making it by far the slowest output LeanImg produces.

How to open a AVIF file

Any current browser displays AVIF, so a browser is usually the quickest viewer you'll find. macOS opens it natively in Preview and Quick Look from Ventura onward. Windows needs the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store before Photos will show one. On Linux, GIMP has imported and exported AVIF since 2.10.22, provided its libheif was built with AV1 support.
