What changes going from JPG to AVIF

AV1 is a far stronger coder than the one that made your JPEG, and it'll spend its effort faithfully reproducing the JPEG's block artifacts along with the picture. Nothing lost in 1998 or last week comes back. The converter asks for quality 50 at speed 6, which is AVIF's own default and a sensible place to leave the slider for photographs; pushing it toward 80 mostly buys back bytes you were trying to shed.

For scale, our 3840x2160 fixture JPEG of 538.6 KB encoded to 186.9 KB as AVIF at quality 63 in the compressor, which makes the identical encoder call. Your result at 50 will usually land lower still, though heavily compressed sources have less to give. The orientation tag is applied to the pixels during decoding, and the rest of the EXIF block, the GPS fix and the color profile are discarded with it. Budget real time as well: a camera-resolution photo takes on the order of ten seconds to encode in the browser, and a batch of fifty is a genuine wait.

On the viewing side you trade a format every device since the nineties can show for one that iPhones only gained with iOS 16 and Edge only in January 2024. Upload forms and photo printing services frequently still refuse the extension. Do this for images you serve yourself, with a JPEG fallback in the markup. Don't do it to your camera originals, and don't do it for a file you're about to email to someone whose software you can't predict.

What is a AVIF file?

AVIF is a single AV1 keyframe wrapped in the same ISOBMFF container HEIC uses. The Alliance for Open Media published version 1.0 in February 2019, and Google measures better than 50% savings against JPEG at comparable quality. It carries continuous alpha as a separate auxiliary image, and its 10-bit color with Rec.2020 or P3 signalling makes it the only common web format that can do HDR stills. The cost is encoding time: AVIF inherits AV1's computational profile, making it by far the slowest output LeanImg produces.

How to open a AVIF file

Any current browser displays AVIF, so a browser is usually the quickest viewer you'll find. macOS opens it natively in Preview and Quick Look from Ventura onward. Windows needs the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store before Photos will show one. On Linux, GIMP has imported and exported AVIF since 2.10.22, provided its libheif was built with AV1 support.
